How Much Legends of Greyhawk?

Every time a new campaign begins, there’s a lot of excitement; doubly so for organized play campaigns. That excitement leads to a lot of wondering about how with things be handled. How often will I get to play? How fast will I get to level? What sorts of treasure should I expect? What rules resources will I get to use?

When an adventure debuts at a convention, special item cards are available. These cards allow a character to trade the item.
With the start of the Legends of Greyhawk (LoG) organized play campaign, a lot of community members are speculating about these things, especially how many adventures there will be and how fast characters will level. The admins for LoG have said that by partnering with the Premiere Organizers there will be more adventures than characters were used when the admins were putting out adventures for D&D Adventurers League (DDAL). In addition, the campaign focuses lower-level play for now (levels 1-10) and Specials, which were previously called epics in DDAL play will not cross tiers so they can focus on the best possible balance and experience.
Understanding how many adventures will be available and what levels they will support are especially relevant questions as players try to decide whether they should have one character used to play every available adventure, have one character that participates in all the adventures for a region, or have a few characters that each play in a two or more regions? For those not familiar with LoG it’s worth noting that in order to level you need the complete one adventure to achieve 2nd-level, two more to get to 3rd-level, three more for 4th, and four more for every level after that. Also, players are allowed to refuse rewards from adventure. This means they earn no experience, magic items, or gold for having played, but still advance the story and any connections, favors, or marks of prestige are still earned. In LoG’ss beta-phase, there are currently no rules to start a character at any level but 1st.
Number of adventures required to achieve a specific level in Legends of Greyhawk.
As it stands, the four Premiere Organizers (POs) are populating their calendars through the end of 2026. Two of the organizers still have some adventurers to add and of course some adjustments will be made as we balance out the calendar, but counting the 8 adventures that have already premiered, there are 59 adventures on my combined calendar with a few more to be added. Of those, just under a third are Tier Two and the rest are all Tier One. While the first Tier Two appears in the first quarter, most Tier Two adventures are in the second half of the year. There are nine announced regions, though that may also be change once the fourth PO is revealed. Also note there’s no expectation for when Tier Three adventures will be available.
Let’s do some hypothetical math. Its not quite right as I’m rounding and the schedule isn’t fully set. Also, I’m going to say each region puts out the same number of adventures. They don’t. Still is gives some rough numbers that might help you make some early decisions. If there were 60 adventures that means about 20 of them are Tier Two. A character needs 10 adventures to achieve 5th-level (the beginning of tier two). Assuming there might be 10 regions, that means each region puts out about 4 Tier One adventures and 2 Tier Two adventures by the end of 2026. Again this is a simplification, but it helps us do some rough planning.
That means an invested player that chooses to have one character and hopes to play every released adventure would end up forgoing rewards for about 30 adventures and would end at 10th-level. An invested player that chooses to have one character per region would make it to 3rd-level, maybe 4th if it’s a prolific region, but might get stuck unable to play that regions Tier Two adventures assuming it releases some. So, what does this mean for the optimal experience, especially factoring in that there’s no Tier Three adventures in the near future? It looks as if the optimal experience for an invested player that wants play all, or at least most, of the released content, would need to have roughly four to five characters, each playing in two to three regions, possibly divide a region between them. A player with four characters would end the year with their characters being between 6th and 7th-level with none of them being “stuck.” If the player wanted to dedicate a character to two regions only, a few characters would get stuck in Tier One while a few other characters might hit 7th-level. The variation being because each region really doesn’t specifically put out exactly 4 Tier One and 2 Tier Two adventures.
There is one other option. When a DM runs an adventure in LoG, they receive credit for the adventure (experience, magic, gold, marks of prestige) that can be assigned to a character. However, these rewards cannot go to a character that has already (or will) play that adventure and a character cannot gain these rewards more than once. In effect, as far as the paperwork is concerned the DM rewards count as your character having played that adventure. This means that DMs have a little more flexibility. They might devote a character to only one region or two, and then if they need to, they could add rewards from running adventures in another region and use that experience to level if they needed to in order to reach Tier Two.
Now I want to stress this math is based on hypotheticals with rounded, incomplete numbers, but should be close to how things end up. It means that if you playing casually and are not planning to play all of the adventures, there is more than enough content to keep you leveling and not having to wait. If you are an invested fan, you will need to choose between experiencing the story with one character and foregoing a lot of the rewards, or having a few different characters which you may or more not devote to specific regions.
I hope this clears up some of the speculation and gives you something to think about as you try to decide how many characters you want to make, whether you are a causal or invested player. There’s a lot of very exciting Legends of Greyhawk content coming!
